Preventative Dentistry
Periodontal (gum/bone) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Studies show that approximately 85% of the adult population has some stage of periodontal disease, making it more prevalent than heart disease and cancer. The majority of patients are in the early stages of the disease, which is reversible with proper care. If left untreated, the disease is irreversible and can result in tooth loss. Detection and diagnosis of periodontal disease is the key to prevention.
DON'T WAIT UNTIL IT HURTS!
Periodontal disease is progressive and often goes undetected. It begins with gingivitis (inflamed gums) and eventually can advance to affect the supporting bone. If untreated, it can cause the loss of natural teeth. Poor home dental hygiene results in a build up of plaque. It is the plaque that is the culprit for the advancement of periodontal disease. Indications that periodontal disease is present
- Bleeding or tender gums when you floss or brush
- Loose teeth
- Changes in your bite
- Unpleasant breath odour
In our office, we believe that it is invaluable to educate our patients about the causes of periodontal disease and provide a comprehensive, non-surgical approach to the treatment and prevention of periodontal problems. Restorative dental treatment is not successful without a healthy periodontal status. Good oral hygiene habits (electric toothbrushes, home care aids, fluorides, etc..,) and proper professional care are the keys to prevention of periodontal disease.
We look forward to helping you keep that dazzling smile for a lifetime.
